Mar 8, 2017

Major Milestone crossed in BSP’s MODEX PROGRAMME
BHILAIBhilai. A major milestone in  Modernisation & Expansion Programme of SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant, that would enhance the Plant’s hot metal production capacity to 7.5 million tonnes (MT) was crossed today on 7th March 2017 with the lighting up of the stoves of the new Blast Furnace No 8. The lighting up of stoves with which the process of heating of stoves has begun was done by M Ravi, CEO in the presence of PK Sinha, ED (Mines), Hriday Mohan, ED (MM),  TB Singh, ED (Works),  MK Barman, ED (P&A), AK Mathur, ED (Proj) SAIL Corporate Office, General Managers and senior officers of the Plant and Projects Dept, representatives of equipment & technology suppliers, M/s Paul Worth, Italy and consortium partner, M/s L & T and M/s Paulwurth, India.
BHILAIOne of the biggest blast furnaces in the country, Bhilai Steel Plant’s new BF 8 has an annual hot metal production capacity of 2.8 million tonnes. The new state of the art blast furnace can produce more than 8000 Tonnes of hot metal per day.
The new furnace has three numbers of hot blast stoves constructed with welded steel shells and lined with refractory checker bricks. The mushroom dome shaped internal combustion type stoves with ceramic burners that have been designed and supplied by M/s Paul Wurth would provide adequate supply of hot blast at a hot blast temperature of 1250 ºC. The hot blast stoves system consists of fuel gas and combustion air facilities, flue gas exhaust, flue chimney, cold blast, hot blast system along with valves and controls. The stoves are equipped with waste heat recovery system (WHRS) for increasing the temperature of BF gas and combustion air and ensure energy conservation.
It is worth mentioning that pressure testing of the cold blast line connected to stoves was successfully done late in the evening of 6th March 2017. With the process for starting of heating of stoves begun now, it is a matter of time now for the heating process of the new blast furnace to begin.
