‘GUNVATTA 2016’ concludes at BSP

The Quality Circle (QC) team SMART from Blast Furnaces bagged the first position in Manufacturing Stream section of the In-plant QC and 5S project presentation competition, GUNVATTA-2016. In Manufacturing Support Stream, the QC team RECLAIMER from CO&CCD bagged the first position among the old teams participating. ANTARISKH QC Team from Instrumentation Dept bagged the first prize among the new teams competing in Manufacturing Support Stream. AAKAR – a team from Education Dept bagged the first position in Pure Services Stream. In the 5-S Stream of the competition, the team SYNERGY from Merchant Mill bagged the first position.
Certificates were given away to the top-ranking teams of all the four streams of GUNVATTA-2016 by RK Prasad, GM I/c (P&A) on 11th August 2016 in the presence of senior GMs, HODs, nodal officers and members of the Quality Circles and 5S teams. The venue – Main Assembly Hall of HRDC was jam-packed with the hall resonating to the clapping and cheering of participants each time the results were announced.
Twenty six teams from different departments of Works and non-Works areas of BSP participated in this competition in four streams- Manufacturing, Manufacturing Support, Pure Services and 5-S. For the first time, separate Merit lists were prepared for OLD and NEW teams. The criteria of being considered NEW is that the team should have either all new members or maximum two old members. Of the 26 teams, only 4 teams were OLD teams. A total of four teams competed in Manufacturing Stream, seven teams including four new teams competed in Manufacturing Support Stream while four teams competed in Pure Services Stream. In the 5S stream, 11 teams competed.
Team members of SMART QC are S/Shri -AK. Sheshgiri, Kirti Dewangan, R. P. Singh, Krishna Rao, Tandan Das Murlidhar and Facilitator Shri S. Varghese. Team members of RECLAIMER QC are S/Shri – P. Vyawahare, Rajesh Singh, S. Mazumder, R. A. Yadav, S.B. Singh and Facilitator Shri Hemant Sahu. Team members of ANTARISKH QC are S/Shri – Jiwadhan Prakash, D. K. Sahu, Hemlal Verma, Mohar Lal Mirche, Ms.Nitu Tiwari and Facilitator Ms. Neerja Sharma. Team members of AAKAR QC are S/Shri – Ms. Sridevi Durge, Vijay Kumar Chaube, C.P.Sharma, Ashok Singh, Ms. Uma Pandey, Ms. B Padma and Facilitator Ms. Indira Achari. Team members of SYNERGY are Vijay Kumar Yadav, Murlidhar Awsarmol, Yogesh Kumar Yadu and Facilitator Shri D.K.Patel.
A forum to promote voluntary employee participation in improvement activities, the in-plant QC competition enables employees to showcase and share their achievements. In the past, many teams selected from this competition have gone on to win accolades at the national level.
GUNVATTA-2016 was inaugurated by PR Deshmukh, GM I/c (Works) on 9th August 2016. Stating that our company is facing severe financial constraint, Shri Deshmukh said that and there is an urgent need to reduce cost, improve efficiencies, implement across the board improvements to meet the requirements of today’s business environment. QC is one perfect tool to be used during these times, he said, adding that one of the reasons that BSP is considered as one of the best steel plants is the spirit, the passion and the dedication behind the innovative use of QC tools that not only improves processes thereby benefitting the organization but also helps bring about a greater harmony in BSP’s work culture.
For the first time, a knowledge test was organized for both QC and 5S teams on 4th August 2016. This was in line with the practices at Chapter conventions and National conventions. The QCFI publication was uploaded on BE website. Also a sample set of questions were uploaded.
Speaking on the occasion of results declaration, RK Prasad, recalled in his previous tenure at HRD when they had trained the QC participants for international competitions, so that they were able to put their best foot forward. He further opined that in the changed scenario, it was imperative that the QC projects should flow into the Knowledge Management system. He further stated that one should be motivated by the recognition rather than the rewards. He appreciated BE department for systemizing the QC movement and bringing in innovation into the system. He appreciated the efforts of the judges. Shri. HN Rai, GM (BFs) and Shri. Kamalendu Das, GM (SMS-1), along with senior DGMs and HODs also graced the occasion.
The participating teams were evaluated by a three member Panel of Judges for each stream. Shri. SV Nandanwar, DGM (SP-2), GS Venugopal, DGM (Projects), and Ms. Bhuvana Chawla, DGM(C&IT), who also adjudged the various presentations, appreciated the projects taken up by the teams and suggested that Nodal Officer of each department should try to bring in at least one new team from their departments. They deemed that the participation by new teams was encouraging and that they could be provided further guidance.
Prior to giving away the certificates of the winning teams, ranking of top 50% teams were also announced.
SPS Jaggi, GM (BE), welcomed the guests and the members of the QC and 5S teams. Yogesh Shastri announced the results, SS Mattu gave the Vote of Thanks. Smt. Manju Haridas conducted the program.
