BSP introduces dual speed cutting at hot saws of Rail & Structural Mill

Jul 26, 2018

Bhilai Steel PlantBhilai. SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s Rail and Structural Mill has been a forerunner in meeting all track requirements of Indian Railways for about six decades. In an endeavor to meet the stringent straightness requirements a modification has been done at hot saws. The rails are cut to desired lengths at hot saws and there is tendency of rails to get bent at ends during cutting in hot condition resulting in bent ends.  These bent end rails have to be either salvaged or refinished which impacts on quality and production. The electrical team at RSM comprising Shri Dhurjati Sinha , Shri S K Borkar, Shri Suresh Kumar Soni and Keshav Tiwari have done a major modification in cutting speed at hot saw and introduced dual speed cutting. The saw moves forward at faster speed but cuts the rail at slower speed.  A new scheme has been introduced in feed panel which senses the idling and cutting of saw and adjusts feed speed accordingly. This has resulted in reduction of bent end defect in rails and enhanced quality and improved productivity.
